Regular exercise is considered to be one of the most important preventive measures for reducing the risk of chronic ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as ischaemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus and colon cancer. However, with a hectic lifestyle and an increased reliance on new technologies, many of us may find it impossible to achieve the recommended amounts of physical activity. In fact, obesity and lifestyle diseases have become epidemics that affect millions of people world-wide.

On the other hand, sports participation has become increasingly popular, esptivating sporting programmes, appeal of sports stars, accessible sport facilities in the community, and the health benefits of sports. Unfortunately, this welcome trend has been accompanied by a rise in sports-related injuries.

This exhibition provides visitors with a glimpse of the technology available in research and clinical use to enhance the performance of the elite athlete, as well as technology and means that the public can use in everyday life to improve fitness and prevent injury. It is hoped that, on better understanding their own health-related fitness, our visitors may be encouraged to incorporate sports safely into their everyday lives.

This instrument tracts the volume of air displaced by the body to measure body density, from which the ratio of body fat and lean mass can be calculated.
